Do I really need a professional private tutor?

It depends on your current challenges and goals.

  • Is your child struggling primarily with work completion? Check with your child's teacher about math supports and peer tutors available at school. If those supports aren't enough, consider hiring an older student as a private tutor.
  • Are you or your child finding it consistently difficult to keep up with content? A professional private tutor will skillfully target and explain key concepts. Professional tutors are familiar with the curriculum and can work with students to preview new content so that it makes more sense when it's covered in class.
  • Are you looking for someone skilled at working with students with ADHD, autism, or learning disabilities? Professional tutors are more likely to have formal training in working with students with diverse strengths and needs. Check with individual tutors about what college coursework they've taken and what their experience is working with diverse students.
  • Are you looking for enrichment opportunities? A professional tutor is familiar with the curriculum and has accumulated a myriad of resources for working with students. The tutor will be familiar with online and print resources that extend on what students are learning in class and develop problem-solving skills.

What is the going rate for a tutor?

Note that rates vary by region, tutor's qualifications, and subject tutored. The estimates below are based on the going hourly rates in Colorado Springs. Of course, people can charge whatever they want. You should generally look for a tutor who charges within the ranges below based on their qualifications.

  • High School student: $15-20
  • College student (non-related field of study): $18-25
  • College student (relevant field of study): $20-40
  • College graduate (non-related degree): $20-40
  • College graduate (relevant field of study and/or some teaching/tutoring experience): $35-50
  • Experienced teacher/tutor: starting at $50

What technology do I need for online tutoring?

For online tutoring, you'll need a computer with a webcam. A tablet also works with some limited functionality. We'll be using Zoom, so it's recommended that you download the app prior to your first session. I use a small graphics tablet as we work through problems digitally. If you'd like to purchase one, the one I use and recommend is HUION HS64 which you can find for $30-40.

What are your rates?

Tutoring sessions with Sum-It Learning are typically 50 minutes. A 50-minute session is $55-65 depending on student age, subject, and whether sessions are paid for in advance. This rate includes communication between sessions and quarterly parent meetings, upon request.
