Tutoring Philosophy
In general, tutoring works best when it is viewed as a long term investment, rather than a cram session. Sum-It Learning's tutoring philosophy is to help students develop a strong understanding of the concepts, so they can retain what they learn and make connections with new learning. When tutoring a student, we work slowly and thoroughly on a small number of problems, asking questions along the way so that we know how to best support the student's learning. Sometimes, that means going back and relearning concepts that were never mastered, but are fundamental for further studies. Our emphasis on helping students develop a strong conceptual understanding boosts their confidence and helps them have a more positive view of learning.
| ## History of Sum-It Learning In July of 2017, I had just returned from a vacation to Thailand. There was still a month before school started, and I was feeling a bit antsy. I wanted to use my time well and figured, "What better way than to tutor some students before school starts?" By August, I was meeting in-person with 2 clients regularly. Summer afforded us a good deal of flexibility with scheduling, but once the school year started, we were much more limited on when we could meet. So, I had the idea to try online tutoring using Zoom. Both clients agreed to help me pilot online tutoring, and from the start it has been a great success! These clients appreciated the greater flexibility with scheduling- not only could they meet for tutoring without leaving home, they were able to schedule sessions as short as 30 minutes. Although both clients were local, they decided to continue tutoring with the online format. |
Since my first online tutoring session in August 2017, I have had the opportunity to work with students from several states in the following content areas: 5th grade math, 7th grade math and writing, 8th and 9th grade Language Arts, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1 & 2 (including AP), SAT Prep (all subjects), ACT Prep, Praxis Prep, GRE Prep, and more.
In the fall of 2017, I came up with the name Sum-It Learning. It was a perfect fit for my Denver founded business that specializes in mathematics. I met with my friend Bruce, a graphic designer, to discuss a possible logo. He did an excellent job coming up with the clever design. Thanks, Bruce!
